Alphabet odd one out puzzle. A pair work or small group activity in which the learners have to guess which one of the letters is the odd one out and why. It may be because of the difference in sound, or for another reason. The answers are 1) D- all the others are vowels; 2) G- the others have same vowel sound; 3) C- the only one not in alphabetical order; 4) I- the others have the same vowel sound; 5) F- the others have the same pronunciation as words e.g. y=why, u=you etc.;6) O- the others are consonants; 7)W- vowel sound; 8) A- vowel sound. It may be possible that learners find other justifiable answers. You'll have to check for yourself if it's valid or not.

Alphabet bingo cards. 30 bingo cards with letters of the alphabet.

Estimating sales figures. A pair work or small group activity. By estimating the sales figures for the other months, the learners will practise speaking numbers. The results, in chronological order, are; 10m, 8m, 14m, 22m, 7m, 19m, 16m, 13m, 9m, 11m, 18m, 5m and 25m.

Year cards. A pair work or small group guessing game activity. On each card is mentioned a famous event in history and the year when it happened. One student takes a card and tells the event to the others e.g. 'the assassination of John Kennedy'. The others have to guess the year.

Secret code. A pair work or small group puzzle activity to practise letters and numbers. The learners work together to decipher the code in order to find the objects. All the objects are things that can usually be found in an office. The coded words are; 1) calendar; 2) diary; 3) file; 4) chair; 5) desk; 6) plant; 7) calculator; 8) computer; 9) telephone.

Roman numbers. A pair work activity to practise letters and numbers. Learners work together to find the answers.

Calculator game. A pair work or small group activity to practise numbers and decimal numbers. A calculator is needed to play this game. See the instructions on the game sheet for details.

Guess the price game. A pair work, small group or whole class guessing game activity to practise talking about numbers. This activity is similar to the well-known TV show that most learners know. It is important, however, for the teacher to tell the students in which shop and when he or she looked for the prices of the different products as the price can change from shop to shop.
